Know Your Rights, Use Your Rights – Carers' Rights Day 2025

At Little Miracles Charity, we know that caring for a child with additional needs, disabilities or a life-limiting condition can be both rewarding and overwhelming. Every day, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends step into the role of unpaid carers — often without realising just how many rights and forms of support are available to them.
That’s why we’re proud to support Carers' Rights Day 2025, organised by Carers UK, taking place on Thursday 20 November.
This year’s theme, “Know your rights, use your rights,” shines a spotlight on helping carers understand what they are entitled to — and empowering them to access that support.
Why Carers' Rights Day Matters to Our Families
At Little Miracles, we meet hundreds of families each year who dedicate their lives to caring for children with complex needs. Many parents tell us they don’t see themselves as “carers” — they’re simply doing what any parent would do for their child.
But being recognised as a carer is more than just a label — it opens the door to vital rights, protections, and practical help that can make life that little bit easier.
For example, carers have the right to:
-
Take up to five days of unpaid Carer’s Leave each year to manage care responsibilities.
-
Request flexible working arrangements from day one of employment.
-
Be identified as a carer by your GP, ensuring access to flu jabs and priority health support.
-
Ask for a Carer’s Assessment to explore what additional help might be available.
-
Be consulted when your child is discharged from hospital, so you can plan the right care at home.
-
Be protected from discrimination at work or in public services because of your caring role.
Knowing and using these rights can make a real difference — helping carers look after both their families and themselves.
Standing Up for Carers
Carers UK has been championing unpaid carers for nearly 60 years. Their ongoing campaigns aim to:
-
Make caring a protected characteristic under the Equality Act.
-
Secure better financial support for carers.
-
Improve workplace flexibility and paid leave options.
-
Strengthen recognition and collaboration within the NHS and social care services.
We stand alongside Carers UK in calling for these changes — because every carer deserves respect, recognition and real support.
