DLA: Our guide to help families
Applying for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) can be one of the most overwhelming parts of caring for a child with additional needs. The form is long, detailed and often emotional to complete.
At Little Miracles, we understand how this feels. Our team has supported hundreds of families through the process, and many of us have been through it with our own children and families too. This guide is here to walk alongside you, explaining what DLA is, who can apply, how to fill in the form and how we can support you every step of the way.

Understanding Disability Living Allowance
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit designed to help with the extra costs of caring for a child under 16 who has a disability or life-limiting condition. For many families, it can make a meaningful difference to day-to-day life, helping with things like travel to hospital appointments, therapy equipment, specialist clothing, or the extra care and supervision your child may need.
The official eligibility details can be found on the GOV.UK page for DLA for children, but we know the guidance can sometimes feel difficult to interpret. Our aim is to explain what those rules mean in real life and help you describe your child’s daily routines, care needs and challenges in a way that the Department for Work and Pensions can clearly understand.
Why Families Sometimes Find the DLA Form Difficult
Many parents tell us that completing the DLA form can bring up difficult emotions. It can feel as though you’re being asked to focus only on the hardest parts of your child’s day, or that you have to “justify” the support your child needs. Questions about personal care, mobility, supervision and emotional support can feel very personal and sometimes exhausting to write about.
Please know that you are not alone in feeling this way. We understand how important it is to get the application right, and we also understand how draining the process can feel. Our team has seen hundreds of DLA applications and understands what decision-makers are looking for, helping families explain their child’s needs clearly and confidently.

Step-by-Step Overview
Many families find it helpful to approach the DLA form step by step rather than trying to complete it all at once. Here are some simple ways to make the process easier:
- Gather evidence – collect diagnosis letters, school or nursery reports and any therapy notes that explain your child’s needs.
- Keep a diary – write down the help your child needs throughout the day for at least a week. This can make it much easier to remember details when completing the form.
- Work through one section at a time – there’s no need to rush. If you are completing the form online, you can save your progress and return to it later.
- Be specific – explain how long tasks take, what support is needed and how your child’s needs may differ from other children of the same age.
- Get a second pair of eyes – our Family Support team can review your answers and offer guidance before you submit the form.
Taking these small steps can reduce stress and help you feel confident that you’ve clearly explained your child’s needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for DLA?
You can apply if your child is under 16 and needs more help or supervision than other children of the same age due to a disability or health condition.
How long does the application take?
Processing times vary, but it can take up to 16 weeks. Preparing your form properly helps avoid delays.
Can Little Miracles help me fill out the form?
Yes. Our Family Support team can guide you through each section or review your completed draft before you send it.
What if my claim is refused?
You can request a mandatory reconsideration which must be done within one month. We can help you understand the reasons for refusal and prepare additional evidence. If the DWP's decision remains unchanged then you can appeal to a Tribunal. Again, we can help you prepare for this by gathering evidence, completing the form and attending the Tribunal Hearing with you. Simply reach out to our Family Support Team form more information.
Do I need a medical diagnosis first?
Not always. Evidence of your child’s daily needs is most important, but medical information strengthens your application.
