When A finished primary school, he was excited to start Year 7 like everyone else.

But things didn't go to plan.

On his very first day, it quickly became clear that the school couldn't meet his needs. English wasn't A and his mum's first language, which made an already difficult situation even harder to navigate. Instead of settling into secondary school, his mum found herself taking him home, unsure what to do next.

For months, A had no school place, no EHCP and wasn't in any form of education.

He was only 11 years old, but he'd already fallen through the cracks.

Eventually, the Romany Traveller Community Link Officer heard about the family through another professional and contacted Little Miracles to see if we could help.

At the time, nobody realised just how much support the family would need.

Getting to know A

When we first met A, he was incredibly quiet. He rarely spoke, was a little anxious around new people and would rather spend his time sitting quietly with a member of the team, sharing a cup of tea and dipping biscuits together.

It's in those little moments that trust is built. It doesn't happen overnight, especially for a child who's had such a difficult start, and we didn't rush him. Week by week, little by little, A started to come out of his shell.

As we got to know the family better, it became clear that getting A back into education was only one piece of the puzzle.

We support the whole family

During home visits, we saw first-hand just how much the family were struggling. We noticed A's shoes were falling apart, he didn't have a suitable coat for winter, and there were concerns about whether there was always enough food at home.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to help with practical things that many of us take for granted, things like new trainers, warm clothing, food support and Christmas presents.

Most people think support is just filling in forms or attending meetings. But sometimes it's making sure a child has shoes that fit or making sure there's food on the table. And sometimes, that practical support is what makes the biggest difference.

Watching A grow

Over the last three years, we've watched A grow into a completely different young person.

He's been on his first trip to the cinema, visited a theme park, explored farms, enjoyed residential trips and made new friends along the way.

He's also discovered something even more important... confidence!

Today, A arrives at the centre with a smile, says hello to everyone, makes his own breakfast, joins in activities, plays football with other young people and happily starts conversations with everyone.

The little boy who once struggled to engage with new people is now an important part of the Little Miracles community, always asking how everyone is and a genuine pleasure to be around.

Looking ahead

This summer marks a huge milestone.

After many meetings, paperwork, phone calls and working alongside other professionals, A has finally secured a place at a local specialist school.

We're incredibly proud of him!

Our support won't stop once he starts school either. We'll continue working alongside A and his family as they navigate this exciting new chapter together. Before term starts, he'll also be joining us on our residential trip, another opportunity to make memories, build confidence and just have fun.

Every child deserves that chance

When we look at A now, it's hard to believe how much has changed. All the small (and big!) moments of support added up over time, allowing him to thrive.

Whether it was a new pair of shoes, a chat with one of our team members, a day out, someone advocating for his needs or just coming to the centre and feeling safe. That's what support looked like for A. 

And that's why we're so passionate about making sure every family of children with additional needs, disabilities and life-limiting conditions who need us knows we're here to help.
